Many people will assume that energy is an infinite resource, when we need more we will just make more. If we feel a bit tired we can perk ourselves up with a cup of coffee or other stimulant.

As a basic premise this is true, however, there are a couple of key considerations to make when it comes to our energy levels. If we don't account for these then we can fall into a vicious cycle of fluctuating energy levels which leads to a reliance on increasing amounts of caffeine and sugar. This then feeds back into finding that you just don't feel as full of zing as you would ideally like.

Also, one of the key reasons many people will have less than optimal energy is that their rest isn't as rejuvenating as it could be. Advice to boost results
  • Avoid caffeine on an empty stomach. This makes you feel energetic in the short term as it triggers your body to produce the stress hormone adrenaline. This can only happen a certain amount of times before your refill rate starts to struggle to keep up and that causes the sudden dip around 3-4pm, usually triggering an urge for a sweet snack. It will take a few days to get used to starting your day without that adrenaline trigger but your system will adapt and you will feel infinitely better. Enjoy your coffee, matcha or stimulating beverage of choice after your first meal of the day when your body is running on food for fuel rather than turning to adrenaline.
  • Reconsider your morning routine. What happens when you wake up in the morning? Our brain can only respond to the signals we send it, which are dictated by our habits. If this is waking up with a start to an alarm, rushing around, doing the school run or heading straight into work, you can see we're setting the scene for a body that's on edge which knocks energy off course. Establish a 5 minute MMM (meditation, movement, mindset) to reset this. Minute 1: breathe in a rhythm of in for 3, hold for 4, out for 5. Minutes 2 and 3: add some kind of movement (simple stretches, squats or marching with your knees up to your chest). Minutes 4 and 5: establish a positive mental setting for the day.
  • Establish stable blood sugar levels. What you eat first each day dictates what your blood sugar levels and energy levels will then do for the next 24 hours. Make your 1st meal savoury, rich in protein, fibre and slow burning carbohydrates. Examples such as a wholegrain toast with salmon and eggs, scrambled tofu or cottage cheese and cucumber, pancakes made with eggs and protein powder or leftovers from dinner the night before are fantastic. If you aren't particularly hungry in the morning but find you crave sweets after lunch or dinner this indicates your body is used to relying on adrenaline in the morning. Start to retrain this by having a small handful of nuts and a couple of boiled eggs or some unflavoured yoghurt to start the day. Then have your 1st proper savoury meal when you feel ready for it.
